  2. possession in 1802 and independent on August 31, 1962.  In 1976
  3. the islands became a republic.  The People's National Movement
  4. party has held control since 1956.  The nation is one of the most
  5. prosperous in the Caribbean.  Oil is drilled off shore and the
  6. countries petroleum refining capabilities are used by many
